The short version
Everything stays on your phone. That Key has no accounts, no analytics, no ads, and no server of ours. We treat a photo of a key the way a bank treats a password — because a clear photo of a key can be enough to copy it.
What That Key stores, and where
Key photos, names, notes, storage places, lock photos, and any map spots you choose to save are stored only on your device, inside the app's private storage, protected with Apple's strongest file encryption (they are unreadable while your phone is locked) and behind a Face ID / Touch ID / passcode lock in the app itself.
- Photos are re-encoded before saving, which removes hidden camera metadata such as location.
- When the key can be recognized in the photo, only the key itself is saved — the background (your room, your table, your hands) is cut away.
- Deleting a key deletes its photos and data. Deleting the app deletes everything.
What leaves your phone
Almost nothing, and never without you choosing it:
- Purchases: the yearly That Key Unlimited subscription is processed and renewed by Apple's App Store. We never see payment details. If a subscription lapses, you always keep access to everything you saved — an active subscription is only needed to add new keys.
- Address lookup (optional): if you tap “Look up the street address” or “Find this address”, that one map spot or the address you typed is sent to Apple's map service once, to place or name a pin. Never tapping those buttons means this never happens.
- Map tiles: viewing the Lock map loads map imagery from Apple, like any maps app.
- Sharing (optional): if you share a key with a family member, the file travels directly from your phone (for example by AirDrop). Shared key files never include your addresses, map spots, or where you keep your keys. Encrypted backup files you create are protected with a passphrase you choose — no one, including us, can open one without it.
That Key contains no analytics or crash-reporting services and sends us no usage data of any kind. We could not sell or share your data even if we wanted to — we never have it.
Permissions the app asks for
- Camera — to photograph your keys and locks. Photos stay on your phone.
- Location (while using the app, optional) — only when you tap to save a lock's spot on your map. One position is captured, saved on your phone, and the location service stops. There is no tracking and no background location.
- Face ID — to lock the app so only you can open your key list.
Children
That Key is not directed at children and does not knowingly collect information from anyone — children included, since it collects no information at all.
Changes to this policy
If a future version of That Key ever changes what data is handled — for example, an optional feature that syncs between your own devices — this policy will be updated first, and the app will explain the change in plain words before anything new happens.
